What you can do with it

Concrete ways certified professionals put this credential to work.

  • Show clients and employers a verifiable first-aid credential before they hand you a leash
  • Apply a structured approach to emergencies like choking, bleeding, heatstroke, and suspected poisoning
  • Make faster, better-informed calls about when an animal needs a veterinarian immediately
  • Show facilities and clients a credential they can confirm before an emergency, not after

Pet first-aid and emergency techs know how to stabilize an animal and make good decisions in the gap between an incident and veterinary care — assessing vital signs, managing wounds, and recognizing true emergencies. For sitters, walkers, and facility staff, this knowledge is fast becoming a baseline expectation from clients who are trusting someone else with their animal's life.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the Pet First Aid & CPR assessment?

The assessment includes 12 open-ended questions spanning 9 topic areas, with a 45-minute time limit. You answer in your own words, and an AI evaluator scores your reasoning.

How long do I have to complete it?

You'll have 45 minutes to complete the assessment once you start.

What score do I need to get certified?

You write answers in your own words and an AI evaluator scores each one out of 10 against published criteria for this specialty; your overall percentage is what counts. You need 75% to be certified. Above that, your score sets the standard recorded on the certificate: 75-79% is Professional, 80% and above is Expert. That level is printed on the certificate and shown on its public verification page, so a higher score is worth having rather than just a pass. Below 75% you are not certified and nothing further is charged — you keep your remaining attempts, and the rules are shown again before you start.

Is there a level below the pass mark?

No. Below 75% no certificate is issued at all — there is no participation certificate, which is what makes the ones we do issue worth showing a client. Your report still breaks the result down topic by topic, and you can buy a personalized course written from the answers that lost marks.

What if I don't pass?

Your purchase includes 3 assessment attempts, so your next attempt costs nothing — it is one you have already paid for. A personalized study course, written from the answers that lost marks, is a separate optional purchase; its price is in the table above.

Do I need to renew my certification?

Yes — certifications are renewed annually for €45.

Is a physical certificate available?

Yes, an optional physical certification kit is available for €60.

Does this replace veterinary care?

Absolutely not. First aid is what happens before and on the way to a veterinarian. The assessment specifically tests whether you know the limits of first aid and when immediate veterinary care is non-negotiable.

Am I legally allowed to treat animals with this certificate?

The certificate verifies knowledge; it is not a medical license. Emergency first aid by a caretaker is generally lawful, but diagnosis and treatment are reserved for veterinarians — rules vary by country, so know your local law.

Is this a hands-on practical course?

No — PetCred certifies knowledge through an open-ended, AI-evaluated assessment; there is no in-person practical component. Many professionals pair this credential with hands-on practice, and if you fall short, the optional personalized course, written from your answers, targets exactly the gaps you showed.
