What you can do with it

Concrete ways certified professionals put this credential to work.

  • Offer exotic-pet services backed by a verifiable specialist credential
  • Advise owners on species-appropriate housing, heating, lighting, and diet
  • Reassure clients their unusual pets are in knowledgeable hands — with a certificate they can scan
  • Point owners of unusual species to a specialist credential they can verify in one click

Exotic pet specialists care for animals whose needs differ radically from cats and dogs — reptiles that depend on precise temperature gradients, birds with complex social and dietary needs, small mammals with species-specific housing requirements. Owners of these animals often struggle to find sitters, advisors, or shops that truly understand them, which makes demonstrated knowledge especially valuable in this niche.

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are on the Exotic Pet Specialist assessment?

The assessment includes 12 open-ended questions spanning 8 topic areas, with a 60-minute time limit. You answer in your own words, and an AI evaluator scores your reasoning.

How long do I have to complete it?

You'll have 60 minutes to complete the assessment once you start.

What score do I need to get certified?

You write answers in your own words and an AI evaluator scores each one out of 10 against published criteria for this specialty; your overall percentage is what counts. You need 50% to be certified. Above that, your score sets the standard recorded on the certificate: 50-64% is Foundation, 65-79% is Professional, 80% and above is Expert. That level is printed on the certificate and shown on its public verification page, so a higher score is worth having rather than just a pass. Below 50% you are not certified and nothing further is charged — you keep your remaining attempts, and the rules are shown again before you start.

Is there a level below the pass mark?

No. Below 50% no certificate is issued at all — there is no participation certificate, which is what makes the ones we do issue worth showing a client. Your report still breaks the result down topic by topic, and you can buy a personalized course written from the answers that lost marks.

What if I don't pass?

Your purchase includes 3 assessment attempts, so your next attempt costs nothing — it is one you have already paid for. A personalized study course, written from the answers that lost marks, is a separate optional purchase; its price is in the table above.

Do I need to renew my certification?

Yes — certifications are renewed annually for €45.

Is a physical certificate available?

Yes, an optional physical certification kit is available for €50.

Which species does the certification cover?

The assessment draws on husbandry principles across the common exotic groups — reptiles, amphibians, birds, and small mammals. The current topic areas are listed on this page, pulled directly from the live assessment configuration.

Can I diagnose or treat sick exotic animals with this credential?

No. Diagnosis and treatment are veterinary acts. The certification verifies husbandry and care knowledge — including recognizing the early signs that an animal needs an exotics-experienced veterinarian.

I only work with reptiles. Is this still relevant?

Yes, though the assessment spans multiple exotic groups rather than one taxon. The open-ended format lets you show real depth of reasoning, but you should be comfortable with the fundamentals of every group listed in the topic areas on this page.
